Excerpt from the essay "Encounter":
My Empty Pietà depicts Mary with the shroud that wrapped the body of her Son. Now, she too cannot touch him. She holds the cloth with both hands, in a gesture of an orant, bending to peer into the material, to peer into herself. She—the first Christian—probably sees God there. Looking at these verticals representing the shroud, one can see the presence of God with the eyes of faith. One can also look at them as mere matter, imagining Mary entering the tomb only to fill her hands with matter that is not the result of creation. One can imagine a Mother who will never see her Son again. One can also look at this matter as a veil, a curtain that conceals a certain truth. One can immerse in reflection and constantly discover, keep on discovering, that it is...the Mystery!
