Zbigniew Herbert, emerging from the cave of Lascaux marked by the first, prehistoric traces of art, said: "I was returning from Lascaux the same way I came. Despite having looked, as they say, into the abyss of history, I did not at all have the feeling that I was returning from another world. Never before did I feel more assured: I am a citizen of the Earth, heir not only to the Greeks and Romans but almost to infinity". Indeed, the fruits of culture and art have the taste of nectar and ambrosia – they give the taste of eternity.
