"MICHELANGELO"

PLASTER, 2013

Excerpt from the essay "Encounter":
One could say that art is just a mirror, just an illusion, that it is a manifestation of human weakness, of the inability to cope with reality, creating phantoms. This mirror may not show the whole truth, but it is one of the most magnificent creations or phenomena related to human activity, next to the ability for empathy, for loving others, next to the ability to pass on life. This mirror creates a platform, perhaps magical, not as real as the sensual touch of an object existing in a shared reality, but a platform for an encounter with the person of the past, with the whole world reflected in the consciousness of that person. Someone might say that my encounter with Michelangelo is an illusion, not reality, because this person died five centuries ago, and therefore does not exist and cannot be encountered. I do not deny anyone the right to interpret reality in this way, however, I see the chain of culture and tradition as alive, one can even say that it vitalizes what belongs to the past. Therefore, I encounter Michelangelo in the objects he created, objects called works of art. This encounter happens on a spiritual and material plane. Firstly, he exists in my consciousness through his work, and secondly, as one of many creators who were inspired by his creativity, with every sculpture that bears his influence, I reincorporate him into this live organism – the chain of tradition.
